Beyond Postdigital Boredom: A Doctoral Journey Through Agency and Learning

What happens when doctoral education becomes entangled with the very postdigital conditions that increasingly fragment attention, constrain agency, and erode a sense of meaning?

On Friday, October 2nd, 2026, from 16:00 to 18:00 (CEST), join us online for “Beyond Postdigital Boredom: Agency, Learning Ecologies and the Doctoral Experience“, a talk by Sergio Carvajal-Leoni that takes us through his three-year doctoral journey and the evolving learning ecology he built around it. An event chaired by Juliana E. Raffaghelli (University of Padova) and organized by Martina Zanchin (University of Padova).

About the speaker
Sergio Carvajal-Leoni is an award-winning storyteller, filmmaker, educator, and researcher exploring the intersection of media, learning, and community. He is Creative Director of Tiburon Transmedia LLC and a doctoral researcher in Adult, Professional, and Community Education at Texas State University.

Drawing on the Education Is Boring project, Sergio connects formal doctoral study with media production, public engagement, international collaboration, creative practice, and encounters with scholars and communities across the world. Bringing together postdigital positionality, learner agency, purposeful learning, and curiosity, the talk explores how learning can move beyond institutional and disciplinary boundaries to become more self-directed, relational, and meaningful.

But the story goes further than educational models. It’s ultimately about the people and relationships that make agency possible: supervisors, peers, scholars, and communities willing to recognise what doctoral learners already bring, while creating space for experimentation, intellectual risk, and new scholarly identities.

This event is also a celebration: the winning works of the second edition of the ETH-TECH Art Contest, “What’s my postdigital Positionality?,” will be presented and celebrated live during the session. From individual and collective submissions exploring what it means to inhabit our shared postdigital reality, three works have stood out โ€” and this is the moment they’ll finally be revealed.
