Ethics of AI and Data in Education
The Situated ETH-TECH Perspective: a Framework for Practice
“…placing ethics at the heart of AI and data use in education.”
Our Purpose
The ETH-TECH Framework reflects the teaching and research expertise of teams from Germany, Italy, Romania, and Spain. It proposes a culturally sensitive and contextualized approach to the ethical principles on AI and data in higher education, developed at the EU level.
Built on participatory awareness-raising sessions held in spring 2025 with university teachers and students, the framework highlights the importance of culture, local socio-economic dynamics, and national recommendations in shaping a responsible and inclusive use of AI in higher education.
The ETH-TECH Framework conceptualizes three interwoven levels of ethical engagement with AI in education:
- Technological – how AI systems work, transparency, regulation, and data management.
- Institutional – organizational and policy-related responsibilities.
- Personal – teachers, students, and the classroom as a regulated interaction space.
It focuses on three EU key principles:
- Human agency and oversight
- Transparency
- non-discrimination,Diversity, non-discrimination and fairness
